The U.S. Department of Defense is about to recommend another round of military base closures, and this week President Bush will nominate the members of a new base closure commission. With more than 60 major military installations, California has a lot riding on their decisions. Pat Towell, a senior fellow with the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments in Washington, explains what's at stake.

The conversion of Fort Ord in Monterey County to a university campus is often cited as a "success story" from the first round of federally ordered closures and consolidations. Vallejo has always been a Navy town. The shipyards at Mare Island were a critical link in the supply chain during World War II.
