A white former Bay Area Transit cop who shot and killed an unarmed black man at a BART station in Oakland nearly two years ago is going to prison -- but not for long.
Prosecutors and the family of the victim, Oscar Grant, wanted Johannes Mehserle to get the harshest possible sentence of 14 years. But defense attorneys argued for probation. In the end, L.A. County Judge Robert Perry sentenced Mehserle to just two years in prison. We talk to L.A. Times Reporter Jack Leonard who was in the courtroom as the sentence was handed down.
