Protesters representing various groups march through downtown Los Angeles on May 1, 2012.
Thousands of people throughout California joined the worldwide May Day action Tuesday, with agendas as varied as the protesters themselves.
In Oakland, protesters tried to force businesses to shut down for not observing a "general strike." Other activists spent the night occupying a building owned by the Archdiocese of San Francisco. About 800 people joined picket lines at LAX to protest the use of non-union labor for jobs such as baggage handling. And in Fresno, a pro-immigrant rally at a downtown park took on a festive air.
