Concert in the Caves

The wine caves of Napa Valley usually house the region's finest spirits. But around Christmas, David Auerbach transforms regular caves into resonant concert halls.


Ladies' Lunch

Attending an annual "Ladies' Luncheon" is an obligatory holiday tradition for some young women, especially if one of the ladies is your mother. Two ladies' lunch veterans are Arline Klatt and Beth Lisick, the writers who created the Porch Light storytelling series In San Francisco. For the two of them, the annual tradition brings mixed feelings -- whether the lunching ladies are wearing sweaters embellished with actual light-up Christmas trees, or smart Chanel suits from the '80s.


The Mexican Elvis

What would the holidays be without the live glittering Christmas extravaganza presented by El Vez? This year, the self-appointed "Mexican Elvis" includes in his annual "Mex-Mas" celebration a spoken word challenge to Charlie Brown's Christmas.


"Holiday Meals"

Peach and grape farmer David Mas Masumoto has written four books about his experiences living and farming in the Central Valley. Today he reads "Holiday Meals" from his latest book "Letters To The Valley: A Harvest of Memories."


From L.A. to Bethlehem

Since the 1930s, the celebration of Las Posadas has been an annual tradition on Olvera Street in Los Angeles. On the nine nights leading up to Christmas, Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem is depicted each evening with singing and a candlelight procession. Twenty-one-year-old Christina Mariscal has participated in the festivities since she was two.


"A Mass Transit Tour of the Underworld"

If Dante were a Jewish folklorist with a knack for beat boxing and hip-hop flute, his Inferno might have sounded a bit like the "The Bright River". The play, subtitled "A Mass Transit Tour of the Underworld," is now at San Francisco's a Traveling Jewish Theater.
