Doctors in the Execution Chamber

Friday afternoon, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger denied Michael Morales' bid for clemency in the 1981 rape and murder of a Lodi girl. The Department of Corrections has agreed to have an anesthesiologist present as Morales is put to death to minimize the chance that he feels pain during his execution. For now, that will satisfy legal concerns about violating the constitutional ban on cruel and unusual punishment. This week, federal Judge Thelton Henderson took appointed a federal receiver to take over California's prison medical system.
