African-American Farmers in the Central Valley

Much of the state's agricultural heartland, the Central Valley, was planted and settled by farmers from Oklahoma and the Southeast. Many of the farmworkers who followed them west were African American. That arrangement didn't last long; by the mid-1960s most African Americans had left the farm for better-paying jobs in the city. Today, only a few hundred black farmers still work the land.Reporter: Sasha Khokha


Indian Site Could Soon Be Under Rising Waters of Shasta Lake

A small Indian tribe in Northern California is in a race against time and the federal government. Years ago, Shasta Dam flooded lands sacred to the Winnemen Wintu Tribe. Now the U.S. wants to raise the dam to increase water storage, but that would flood still more sacred lands, including Puberty Rock, a site where one young Winnemen Wintu girl is working to revive a traditional coming-of-age ceremony.Reporter: Nancy Mullane

L.A. Blues Landmark Looks to the Future

L.A.'s Central Avenue blues and jazz movement, often called "the west coast's Harlem Renaissance," enjoyed its heyday in the 1940s and '50s. Babe's and Ricky's Inn is a surviving blues club from that time. It first opened its doors over 40 years ago on Central Avenue, and relocated a decade ago to the Leimert Park district. Today, the club may stand as a homage to the past, but the woman behind it, 85-year-old Laura Mae Gross, strives to provide a venue for the next generation of blues artists.
