Last month the City of Davis opened the Fred T. Korematsu Elementary at Mace Ranch. It is the first school in the country to be named after Korematsu, the Oakland native who defied government orders to report to a Japanese internment camp during World War II. But in deciding to name their school after an Asian American, the Davis community found itself contending with a racially motivated law that is still on their books.
