California poet laureate Al Young has a new collection of poems out called "Coastal Nights and Inland Afternoons." He hs been working to get young people interested in poetry by visiting juvenile halls around the state to talk with kids who've been in trouble with the law.
Away from the tumult of end-of-the-year travel, it isn't hard to find some wonderful holiday traditions in your own neighborhood. Commentator Molly Fisk has some thoughts on appreciating the kitschiness of Christmas time.
This holiday weekend, Christmas carolers will be making stops at nursing homes and hospitals to cheer up the sick and elderly. For lots of Californians, the holiday season means picking out a Christmas tree, lighting the family's menorah or hanging a decorative wreath on the front door. But for some Filipino-Americans, a different image ushers in the holiday season: a homemade, five-pointed lantern called a parol.
For people living in the Sierra foothills town of Grass Valley, the annual holiday street fair is a time to celebrate their roots. Many of their ancestors came from Cornwall, England to mine for gold.
