Poet Laureate Al Young

California poet laureate Al Young has a new collection of poems out called "Coastal Nights and Inland Afternoons." He hs been working to get young people interested in poetry by visiting juvenile halls around the state to talk with kids who've been in trouble with the law.


Commentary: Holiday Lights

Away from the tumult of end-of-the-year travel, it isn't hard to find some wonderful holiday traditions in your own neighborhood. Commentator Molly Fisk has some thoughts on appreciating the kitschiness of Christmas time.


Caroling at San Quentin

This holiday weekend, Christmas carolers will be making stops at nursing homes and hospitals to cheer up the sick and elderly. And in the San Francisco Bay Area this week, carolers also brought some holiday music to a place where there's not much to sing about: San Quentin Prison. About 170 church volunteers -- some from as far away as San Diego, sang in the prison chapel this week.Reporter: Scott Shafer


Meilani Clay's "My Only Other Holiday Poem"

Meilani Clay is an 18-year-old poet from the Bay Area. She's active with the poetry and performance group Youth Speaks, and has won poetry slams for her work. She reads "My Only Other Holiday Poem."


Filipino Parol Party

For lots of Californians, the holiday season means picking out a Christmas tree, lighting the family's menorah or hanging a decorative wreath on the front door. But for some Filipino-Americans, a different image ushers in the holiday season: a homemade, five-pointed lantern called a parol.


A Cornish Christmas in Grass Valley

For people living in the Sierra foothills town of Grass Valley, the annual holiday street fair is a time to celebrate their roots. Many of their ancestors came from Cornwall, England to mine for gold. Now, on Friday evenings in December, the main streets of town come alive with musicians in traditional dress playing Christmas carols and merchants selling homemade goods.Reporter: Carolyn Crane


Gary Soto's "Oranges"

Poet Gary Soto associates December with his first crush on a girl. The Fresno-born poet wrote about it in his last collection, titled "New and Selected Poems." He reads a poem titled "Oranges."
