California Storms

As severe weather hit the state on Friday, Governor Arnold Schwarzengger urged Californians to be sensible and not put themselves at undue risk by needlessly venturing into the storm. Climate Change & California's Water, Part 4: Rising Seas

Scientists say one of the most significant changes coming to California because of global warming is the loss of our Sierra snow-pack. As the temperature rises, the winter storms we rely on for water will have less snow in them and more rain. Where does all that water go? Well, half of the precipitation for the whole state drains naturally into the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. The Delta is the hub for California's complicated water supply system, and, if climate change predictions come true, the Delta's landscape and basic function could be drastically altered. Delta Solutions

Protecting the Delta's fragile ecosystem must be balanced with sending drinking water from there to millions of Californians. Host Scott Shafer talks to a member of the governor's Delta Vision Task Force who says solutions to these problems are doable -- if we can just muster the will to get them done.

Solar Wineries

You wouldn't know it from this week's weather, but the sun is a growing source of energy in California. In fact, some of the wines you're drinking these days may well have been produced with solar power. Winemakers and grape growers, like other farmers in California, worry that global warming could put them out of business. Many wineries are now installing solar electric systems, trying to do their part for reducing climate change by shrinking their carbon footprints. Reporter: Cy Musiker
