Even the best training isn't always enough to keep you out of harm's way. The death of Los Angeles police officer Randy Simmons earlier this month brought that home. Simmons was the first member of the department's elite SWAT unit to be killed in the line of duty. A 20-year veteran of the SWAT team, Simmons was considered one of the very best. He also spent time on the streets working as a minister, mentoring kids in some of the toughest housing projects in the city.
