The Dying Newspaper

If you work in the newsroom at the San Jose Mercury News, you were instructed by management to wait at home this morning. If you didn't get a call telling you that you'd lost your job, you could then come to work. Newspapers across California have suffered similar losses this week -- The Los Angeles Times, The Los Angeles Daily News and the Long Beach Press Telegram are among them. We look at how the economic downturn, lost ad revenue and the Internet are changing the news business. Reporter: Rob Schmitz

The problems at the Los Angeles Times raise a number of questions. Who's reading newspapers these days? Do people who don't read them care if they fade away? We started our search for answers at Ritual cafe in San Francisco's Mission District this week.

Celebrating Wallace Stegner

Wallace Stegner belongs in the pantheon of writers who chronicled and celebrated the American West. At Stanford University in the 1950s and 60s, Stegner was also a highly regarded teacher and mentor to aspiring writers including Larry McMurtry, Wendell Berry and Ken Kesey. This weekend a literary conference celebrating Stegner's work takes place in Pt. Reyes Station. Host Scott Shafer talks to writer Philip Fradkin, who helped create the event. Shakespeare at San Quentin

For inmates at San Quentin Prison, a trip to the theatre is out of the question. This week, the Arts in Corrections program at the prison put on Shakespeare's play "Much Ado About Nothing" -- performed for and with prisoners. The cast of inmates and Marin Shakespeare company members has been rehearsing the play since August. Reporter: Judy Campbell

A Garden on Alcatraz

Every year, over a million people visit Alcatraz. The former maximum security prison there housed convicts like Al Capone and Robert "The Birdman" Stroud, but these days people aren't coming to the island to walk through cold prison cells. They're coming to garden.
