With all eyes on the Democratic contendors for the White House, the state primary election yesterday did not draw much of a crowd to the polls. Fewer than 1 in 5 registered voters showed up in some parts. But across California, political careers riding on the primary scored sweet victories, bitter defeats, or in some cases, a runoff battle in November.
