State Assembly Weekend Budget Meeting
On Sunday, state lawmakers spent four hours discussing a new spending plan. The Assembly Democrat's proposal, however, failed to pass, and the likelihood of a timely compromise could be grim.

Medi-Cal Cuts
For a decade, California lawmakers looking to balance the budget have turned to Medi-Cal for cuts. This year is no different, last winter lawmakers authorized a 10 percent cut in the fees Medi-Cal pays to providers. The cuts took effect last month, and doctors are again threatening to drop patients or drop Medi-Cal altogether.
