The mantra of change that Barack Obama rode into the White House is being put into action this week in Washington. But after eight years of George W. Bush, change can't come fast enough for some. And plenty of interest groups are hoping to bend future policies to their liking.

California's Head Start on Stem Cells

Early next week, President Obama is expected to reverse limits on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research. If federal money starts flowing, California will have a big head start. That's because while many stem cell researchers in the U.S. have put their work on hold the past eight years, California has gone full speed ahead -- with help from voters.Reporter: David Gorn

Counting Nevada County's Homeless

Every couple of years, counties are required to count the number of homeless in their communities -- and the tally is currently underway. Finding the homeless in L.A. or San Francisco isn't difficult, but in rural areas homeless people tend to inhabit some out of the way places. We talked with freelance reporter Catherine Stifter in Nevada County just before volunteers there began their count.

Siskiyou Sled Dog Races

This weekend in the tiny town of Weed, several hundred athletes are hoping to leave a few paw marks in the annals of outdoor sporting events. The Siskiyou Sled Dog Races are running, and for the first time the course will be extended to 210 miles. The extra distance means the race is now California's first qualifying event for the renowned Iditarod Sled Dog Race in Alaska.

Even in the best of times it's hard to make ends meet as a working musician. Gigs can be few and far between, and often they either don't pay well or don't pay at all. Julie Caine met up with some of San Francisco's best musicians who pay the bills by scaring off ghosts.
