California Has a Budget

It wasn't pretty, but the state legislature finally managed to pass an emergency budget as the sun came up Thursday morning. Lawmakers closed a $42 billion gap, at least for now. Governor Schwarzenegger signed the budget Friday afternoon, putting an end to one of the uglier stretches in California politics. Guest: John Myers, Sacramento bureau chief for KQED Public Radio.

Filipino Vets and the Stimulus Package

Filipino veterans of World War II found something to celebrate in the huge stimulus package signed into law by President Obama this week. They risked their lives fighting the Japanese after Pearl Harbor was attacked, but Filipino soldiers never got the benefits they were promised by President Roosevelt. Instead, a year after the war ended, President Truman signed a law stripping them of their status as U.S. soldiers. Filipino activists have been fighting for recognition ever since -- and this week they got it.
