May Day Marches for Immigration Reform

Activists and protesters greeted the first day of May with marches calling for broad immigration reform. California hosted dozens of rallies, more than any other state. One of the largest gatherings was in downtown Los Angeles, where our bureau chief Rob Schmitz hopped on his bike and rode the demonstration route. Reporter: Rob Schmitz

Flu Vaccine Science

As swine flu continues to spread around the world, the Centers for Disease Control must make a major decision -- whether or not to pursue a vaccine. Today, officials said they're holding off for now. Without a vaccine, there's no way to prevent swine flu. But some scientists believe we'll be much better prepared for the pandemics of the future.Reporter: Amy Standen

California's Public Health Labs

If you stumble into your doctor's office with flu-like symptoms in the next few days, the doctor will likely stick a swab into your nose and send that sample to a public health lab for testing. These labs are usually the first to detect an outbreak of disease, such as swine flu. But that network of local labs is being stretched thin in California, a result of years of under funding and tough federal regulations. Reporter: Sarah Varney

Santa Clara County in Verse

Santa Clara County recently chose its first-ever poet laureate. Nils Peterson was named to the honorary post, and one of the first things he's done is to put together an unusual competition. He wants county residents to submit a single poetic line about life in the Valley. One hundred lines will be chosen for a special 'word collage.' We take a peek at some of the early submissions.
