Abalone Hunting Claims Fifth Life This Year

California's red abalones are a culinary delicacy, and people come from far and wide to hunt for them along the state's rocky shores. But it's a dangerous sport, and abalone season claims an average of three lives every year. This year, however, five abalone hunters have drowned already. The fifth, a scuba diver, died last week. What's to blame for the spike in fatalities?
