The California Report Magazine
Birth of the Cool

ListenListen to segment (RealMedia stream)
We can all agree that California is a pretty cool place, right? In fact, California helped invent cool -- and the center of it all was Los Angeles in the 1950s. Post-war southern California was home to an extraordinary bunch of musicians, architects, designers and artists, and they ended up defining what it meant to be hip and cool. "Birth of the Cool," an exhibit celebrating that era, was originally shown at the Orange County Museum of Art. This weekend it moves to the Oakland Museum of California where curator Philip Linhares gave us a preview tour earlier this week.
